What You'll Learn

1

Growing Up in a Land of Idols

Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) was born in the ancient city of Ur in Mesopotamia (modern-day Iraq) during a time when his people worshipped idols and celestial bodies. Even his own father, Azar, was a sculptor who carved idols for worship. From a young age, Ibrahim possessed a keen intellect and a heart that yearned for truth. He observed his people bowing to statues of stone and wood, and deep questions stirred within him.

Key Point

Ibrahim was born into a society deeply immersed in idol worship, yet his pure nature questioned these practices from childhood.

Quran

Surah Al-An'am (6:75-79)

وَكَذَٰلِكَ نُرِي إِبْرَاهِيمَ مَلَكُوتَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَلِيَكُونَ مِنَ الْمُوقِنِينَ

Wa kadhalika nuree Ibraheema malakoota assamawati wal-ardi waliyakoona mina almooqineen

And thus did We show Ibrahim the realm of the heavens and the earth that he would be among the certain [in faith].

Translation: Sahih International

Theme

Allah showed Ibrahim the wonders of creation to strengthen his faith and certainty.

3

The Night of Contemplation

One night, Ibrahim looked up at the sky and saw a brilliant star. He said, 'This is my Lord.' But when it set, he said, 'I do not like those that set.' Then he saw the moon rising in splendor and said, 'This is my Lord.' But when it set, he said, 'Unless my Lord guides me, I will surely be among the people gone astray.' When he saw the sun rising, he said, 'This is my Lord; this is greater.' But when it set, he turned away and declared his submission to the One who created the heavens and the earth.

Key Point

Through logical reasoning and divine guidance, Ibrahim rejected the worship of created things and turned to the Creator.
