Allah's Plan for a Vicegerent

Before creating Adam, Allah announced to the angels His plan to place a vicegerent (khalifah) on Earth. The angels, in their innocence, asked why Allah would place beings who might cause corruption and shed blood. Allah replied, 'Indeed, I know that which you do not know.' This response revealed that Allah's wisdom encompasses all things.

Key Point

Allah chose humans to be His vicegerents on Earth.

Vocabulary

Key Terms

خليفة|Khalifah

Allah created Adam from clay, shaping him with His own Hands - an honor given to no other creation. The clay was gathered from different parts of the Earth, which is why humans have different colors and characteristics. After shaping Adam, Allah left him as a form for a period before breathing life into him.

Key Point

Adam was created from clay from different parts of the Earth.

Surah As-Sajdah (32:7-9)

Who perfected everything which He created and began the creation of man from clay. Then He made his posterity from an extract of fluid. Then He proportioned him and breathed into him from His soul and made for you hearing and vision and hearts; little are you grateful.

The Spirit of Allah

When Allah breathed His spirit into Adam, life flowed through him. According to narrations, Adam sneezed and said 'Alhamdulillah' (All praise is due to Allah), and Allah responded 'Yarhamuk Allah' (May Allah have mercy on you). This was the first conversation between Allah and humanity, establishing gratitude as the foundation of human existence.

Key Point

Adam's first words were praising Allah - 'Alhamdulillah'.

Hadith

Sahih Muslim #2841

Sahih

Narrated by: Abu Hurairah (RA)

The Prophet said: 'Allah created Adam in His image, and his height was sixty cubits. When Allah created him, He said: Go and greet that group of angels sitting there, and listen to what they will say in response, for that will be your greeting and the greeting of your descendants. Adam said: As-salamu alaykum (Peace be upon you). They replied: As-salamu alayka wa rahmatullah (Peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah).'

The Honor of Being Created by Allah's Hands

Allah mentions that He created Adam with His own Hands (Quran 38:75). This is a special honor not given to any other creation - angels were created from light, jinn from fire, but Adam was fashioned directly by Allah.

9

The Prostration of the Angels

Allah commanded all the angels to prostrate to Adam as a sign of respect and honor for this new creation. All the angels obeyed this command immediately, recognizing the special status Allah had given to Adam. This prostration was one of respect, not worship, as worship is only for Allah alone.

Key Point

The angels prostrated to Adam as a sign of honor, not worship.

Quran

Surah Al-Baqarah (2:34)

Wa-ith qulnaa lil-malaa'ikatis-judoo li-Aadama fasajadoo illaa Ibleesa abaa wastakbara wa kaana minal-kaafireen

And [mention] when We said to the angels, 'Prostrate before Adam'; so they prostrated, except for Iblees. He refused and was arrogant and became of the disbelievers.
